What’s Wrong with Health Care for All?

This is an open letter to all those against a national health care system. I don’t care what religion or side of the political fence you are on. And don’t bother to regurgitate what the news agencies have told you. The bottom line is: How can you wish that many Americans would endure sickness and death? How can a national health care system be “evil”?

Don’t you remember that this country was built on “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”? Life equals good health. Health leads to a happier, longer life. We all know this. What kind of a person would you have to be to want to live in this free land and then completely shun everything it is based on, working tirelessly so that others around you might needlessly die? Why do you want your fellow Americans to succumb to disease when we have such advanced technology here to cure people? Isn’t that kind of what the terrorists want too?

Do you think only the rich should survive? Because it’s usually the rich I hear shunning a concept of health for all. Do you think it’s just fine that insurance companies make billions per year on denying ill people coverage, after they have paid them large, hard-won sums? Do you enjoy human suffering? Do you work for the insurance agencies? I just don’t understand.

Who are you people and why are you acting and speaking in ways so that people like me, people who can’t afford health care OR health insurance, would succumb to illness, disease or death? What would you do if you lost all your money and couldn’t afford health care either? We’ve seen lately with the economy that this can happen to anyone. What if some people whom you think should go without health care get a disease that spreads to your homes?

I am asking you once and for all to THINK with your hearts and not with your politics, not with your wallets, and not with your own health care providers currently safely paid for. It won’t last forever, not for you, and not for your families. Because when many of our country’s people are threatened with needless suffering and death by one segment of the population, nobody is safe.

Bloodsuckers!

Warning: This is long… and gross! Do not read without a bottle of calamine lotion nearby.

When I was about 10 years old, my sister and I went swimming at a lake in Fairmont Minnesota. It was full of leeches, but we took our chances. Luckily, they only went for our toes, and my cousins killed them with a mixture of salt and beer.
